Bouquet - Inviting and complex aromatics welcome you into this wine; brambly, leafy notes backed up by deep dark fruit with subtle spice and char interplay on the nose. There is a deceptive density to this wine’s aroma that hints at what lies beyond….
Palate - We think we ‘cracked it’ in 2015 with the inaugural London Calling Cabernet Malbec (by finally getting the boss to let us throw a decent whack of beautiful Malbec plushness in with our structured and at times ‘shy’ Cabernet Sauvignon).
The 2016 release builds on that breakthrough style – the wine shows plush generosity but there is a layering of flavours and complexity to this vintage that invites not just a second but third look. Generous, accessible primary fruit sits pretty up front but let the wine breathe and suddenly these dry, fine and lightly chewy tannins build on the back palate, lending a savoury edge to the dark fruit finish of this baby.
General - We need to let you in on a little secret…this year, for the first the first time we waved a skerrick of ‘Magic Merlot’ over this blend. We have a passionate and determined grower who produces an amazing parcel of merlot grapes from a block adjacent the cellar door. This parcel then sits in the barrel store (old oak) and when used as a finishing aid to almost any red wine seems to pull everything together in a very special kind of way. It contributes structure, softness and acts as a cohesive, cunning negotiator to unite disparate forces into a seamless finished wine….1 – 2% at most the magic of Merlot strikes again!
Serve With - Pulled pork tacos with smoky BBQ sauce and crunchy slaw.
